In the vast landscape of independent record labels, CandyRat Records stands as a beacon for acoustic guitar enthusiasts worldwide. This American label has earned its reputation as a curator of exceptional acoustic guitar talent, consistently discovering and nurturing artists who push the boundaries of what six strings can achieve. As I embark on my latest musical project, I find myself drawing inspiration from the very artists who helped shape my musical journey through their CandyRat releases.

For those unfamiliar with CandyRat Records, imagine a boutique label that treats acoustic guitar music not just as a genre, but as an art form worthy of preservation and evolution. Since its inception, the label has become synonymous with innovative fingerstyle techniques, creative approach to composition, and production excellence that captures every nuance of the acoustic guitar’s voice.

Through its roster of artists, CandyRat has redefined what acoustic guitar music can be. From Andy McKee’s percussive techniques to Antoine Dufour’s harmonic innovations, and from Don Ross’s rhythmic complexity to Ewan Dobson’s technical precision, each artist brings their unique voice to the instrument while maintaining the high standards that have become the label’s hallmark.

Recently, while going through an archive of old recordings, I found myself drawn back to my guitar with renewed passion. This rediscovery coincided with an idea that had been germinating in my mind: creating a collection of original compositions that would pay homage to the CandyRat artists who have influenced me so profoundly.

What makes this project unique is its subtle approach to musical quotation. Each piece I’m working on contains a small musical phrase – sometimes just a few notes – borrowed from a CandyRat artist’s composition. These fragments are carefully woven into my own musical fabric, creating a kind of musical dialogue between my work and theirs. It’s not about imitation, but rather about acknowledgment and artistic conversation.

Take, for instance, my latest piece, “Life is Fragile,” which I recently previewed on SoundCloud. Both its title and a particular phrase within the composition carry echoes of a well-known CandyRat artist’s work. (I’ll leave it as a pleasant challenge for fellow CandyRat enthusiasts to identify the reference – if you guess it right, you’ll earn not just my admiration but also confirmation of your excellent taste in music!)

This approach to composition has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. Each piece requires careful consideration of how to incorporate these musical references while maintaining my own artistic voice. It’s a delicate balance between homage and originality, between past and present, between influence and innovation.

As this collection continues to take shape, I’m discovering that it’s becoming more than just a tribute project. It’s evolving into a personal statement about the nature of musical influence and artistic growth. Each composition tells two stories: the story of the music that shaped me, and the story of where that influence has led me as an artist.

The project remains a work in progress, with new pieces constantly evolving and taking shape. What started as a simple idea has grown into something more meaningful – a musical testimony to the power of artistic influence and the endless possibilities that arise when we allow ourselves to be inspired by the work of others while finding our own creative voice.

For those interested in following this musical journey, I’ll be sharing more previews and insights as the project develops. And who knows? Maybe some of you will enjoy the little musical treasure hunt of identifying the CandyRat references hidden within each piece.
