Why your brain is sabotaging your analysis

The military mobilization trap

Obviously psychological warfare. The enemy’s defensive preparations? They’re clearly getting ready for our counter-attack. That intelligence suggesting the whole thing might be a routine exercise? Well, that source was always a bit unreliable anyway.

The cybersecurity version of the same problem

Every technique you discover gets filtered through “how would APT29 do this?” You start looking for their specific TTPs, their known infrastructure patterns, their typical operational timeline. Your threat hunting focuses on indicators associated with their previous campaigns.
But what if it’s not APT29? What if it’s a completely different group using borrowed techniques? What if it’s multiple actors? What if some of those “APT29 indicators” were deliberately planted to throw you off the scent?
I’ve watched incident response teams declare victory after finding what they believed was the full extent of an APT29 compromise, only to discover weeks later that they’d missed an entirely different attack vector because it didn’t fit their Russian-focused hypothesis.
The sneaky ways bias infiltrates your process
Confirmation bias doesn’t just affect what you look for—it affects how you see what you find. It’s like wearing tinted glasses that you don’t realize are tinted.
Let’s say you’re convinced a particular IP address is part of a botnet command and control infrastructure.
